The Teylers museum is the first and oldest museum of the Netherlands. It's the best preserved public research institute for art and science of the 18th century in the world. The museum was founded in 1784.
The museum is located in the house of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702 - 1778). He was a wealthy silk manufacturer and banker. Living in the Age of Enlightment, he had a great interest in art and science. After his death, the executors of his testament decided to build a museum in which objects of art and science could be united. In 1784 the museum opened his doors for the public for the first time.
